This short story collection was exactly what I have been craving. I needed to read and connect with Caribbean narratives. The vivid images of the islands represented and the music of the varied island dialects was a real delight to read and experience.
Pepperpot: Best New Stories From the Caribbean was the first publication by PeeKash Press, an imprint of @akashicbooks and Peepal Tree Press. Pepperpot consists of new short stories by authors living in the region (not simply authors from the region), this collection gathers the very best entries to the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2013, including a mix of established and up-and-coming writers from islands throughout the Caribbean.
My favourite Pepperpot stories were:
- “Amelia at Devil’s Bridge” by Joanne C. Hillhouse from Antigua and Barbuda
- “Mango Summer” by Janice Lynn Mather from the Bahamas
- “Berry” by KImmisha Thomas from Jamaica
PeeKash Press also published a Caribbean poetry collection, “Coming Up Hot” in 2015. I hope that PeeKash Press will commit to publishing more new and emerging Caribbean literature in 2016. Certainly hope a new Caribbean short story collection will be in the works soon. @akashicbooks hoping to hear news of Pepperpot Book Two.
